Mugshots - some of the best photography ever

Just a short one…

John Hollings - Larceny

I was watching “Sofa Sessions” on YouTube just now, a relatively new series where photographer Martin Parr chats with other photographers. This session was with street photographer Bruce Gilden. Towards the end, at around 18 minutes, Gilden is talking about quality in photography and starts taking about his love for police mugshots, referring to it as “some of the best photography ever” - it made me think, certainly they have the potential to be very interesting pictures or portraits, I did a couple of quick searches and this tremendous archive turned up on Flickr, well worth a look and easy to see how this sort of character study could sit well alongside Gilden’s candid street portraits.
